I accepted the challenge to raise funds to support the YMCA of Greater Houston/Camp Cullen. As a volunteer with the the Y, I have seen first-hand how the organization is making a difference in the lives of youth and families in our community.
At the Y, we impact thousands of lives every year through the programs we offer in the areas of eliminating drowning, improving academic performance, eliminating chronic disease and childhood obesity and creating opportunities for social equity. We strive to offer to members of our community an environment that fosters personal growth, leadership skills and healthy relationships.
Your support to our cause makes a true impact, allowing us to help those who would not otherwise be able to afford to participate in Y programs. We believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about when we all work together to invest in our kids, our health and neighbors.
I am a volunteer Y board member and have been for somtime. I serve on a number of committees and can't express just how much the Y has done for my grown children and now my step-son. Tyler has been going to the Y for a number of years and is wanting to give back as a counselor to the Summer programs and help other children discover the spirituality, healthy lifestyle, mental awareness/growth and long term friendships he has found at Camp Cullen and our local Y.
Together, we can create a stronger community and build a BETTER US. I am committed to meet community needs by focusing on the programs listed below. Please consider making a gift today and support our efforts to strengthen our community through the YMCA. When you donate to the Y, you make our community better and the US who live in it stronger. We can't do it alone.
There are many programs that I am an advocate of that are provided by the YMCA and Camp Cullen. Please consider giving what you can and reaching out to others in your network to assist with the following programs. (Feel free to designate your donation to a specific area of interest).
Water Safety Education - Eliminate Drowning - At Camp Cullen all campers are tested daily and anyone not knowing how to swim when arriving are swimmers when they leave.
Operation Purple - Sponsoring children of Military families to go to summer camp. Many of our Military that serve are financially unable to or may be serving our country and not at home.
Camp Cullen Sponsorship - Assisting families that are unable to financially send their child(ren) to a summer camp. Most of these children have never been "unplugged" or had the opportunity to be around the outdoors on this level. No electronics, TV's, computer games are allowed. Activities are outdoors and children learn to communicate one on one and leave with a host of experiences and new friends. Camp provides an environment that provides social equity, arts, science, geology, astronomy, equestrian, water sports, crafts, and many other daily activities.
Kamp Ka'ana - Dedicated to healthy eating and children with Diabetes. I have personally seen remarkable changes with children that adapted to and continue improving their health by learning to make better choices in their lifestyle and eating habits. The Program is dedicated to eliminate chronic disease and childhood obesity; provides health education, wellness and nutrition classes, support groups and partnerships in an effort to eliminate youth obesity and chronic diseases, such as hypertension and Type 2 diabetes
Teen Leadership Program - Problem solving, effective communication, interviewing, leadership and teamwork skills are just some of the skills learned. It benefits any teen who wants to become a better leader in their school and their community. The program also provides teens with the opportunity to connect with other teens on common ground.
Family Camp - provides an environment at Camp Cullen to allow families to bond without the day to day electronics and other distractions.
Other programs include: Children Museum Partnerships, Geology Program, Gregory Lincoln School, KIPP Schools, Center Community Outreach, Adult Senior Programs, and Medical Staff Support and plans to expand to address Mental Health among children and teens.
Facilities and Long Term Capital Planning - Sustainability with continued infrastructure to ensure programs and facility structure are in place as programs grow and new ones are introduced.
Please join me in making the difference. Thank you!
