Do you have a 'Y' story? It seems that almost everyone I know has been impacted by the YMCA somehow. Some learned to swim at the YMCA. Some played youth sports or attended a YMCA summer camp program. Some worked as a YMCA as a coach, instructor or camp counselor. What's your "y" story? I would love to hear from you!! If you do not have a 'Y' story, please read on and perhaps, start one of your own...
What is my 'Y' story? It starts when I was in elementary school when dad enrolled me in the YMCA's Guides program. I love camping with my dad and learning how to become a "Brave." The Guides & Princesses program is all about learning how to become a responsible and caring person. As a teenager, my first job was at the Downtown YMCA where I worked on Saturdays keeping the Health Club clean. I also learned how to lift weights and play handball by watching men compete against each other. And as a parent, my kids and I participated in the YMCA's Guides/Princess and in the youth sports programs.
Currently, I serve at the Tellepsen Family Downtown YMCA and help raise support so that others can benefit from these important YMCA programs. They YMCA does so many great things and it makes programs accessible to those who need a little help. The Y is a place where everybody is welcome and there is something for everyone. There are swim lessons, youth sports programs, youth leadership programs, fitness programs for kids, adults and seniors as well as wellness programs for cancer survivors and for people managing chronic diseases like Diabetes or Athritis. There is also Operation Backpack and the Panther Caring Closet where the Downtown YMCA provides backpacks, school uniforms and other basic needs to children at Gregory Lincoln Education Center.
