As most of you know I have been active with YMCA Camp Cullen since I retired 5 years ago. What drew me to the Camp Cullen Board (Other than Toni Blankmann saying it was a perfect fit for me.) was my love of the outdoors and the fundamental values the YMCA brings to our youth. I grew up in the Boy Scout system and camped throughout my life. Seeing the faces in our young as they catch their first fish, hit their first target with a bow, or just sit and watch them admire/discover a small part of God's creation, just makes me smile.
Several years ago the Camp had a fire, shut down for a couple years, and rebuilt itself into a first class facility. It is a great environment to introduce youth to nature and self growth. It has preserved enough of its history to spark the memory of those like myself that brought our daughters or sons to weekend camps when they were small. It also has great new cabins and numerous new facilities, including a just opened Equestrian Center and an Arts & Science Building. Now we need to fill the camp with campers!
Each year our board raises funds to send kids to camps. This provides a unique opportunity for many in our community to experience what you and I experienced in our youth. It still amazes me that many of our youth have never experienced the woods. It also brings nice deversity to the camp as there are individuals from all social and economic backgrounds.
If you feel this hits home for you, please consider making a gift.
